Eskom Holdings SOC Limited has appointed Nako/Iliso (Pty) Ltd to conduct an environmental screening for the construction of a 2nd 765kV Gamma-Kappa transmission line, the expansions of the Gamma substation yard (near Victoria West in the Northern Cape) and the Kappa substation yard (near Touwsrivier in the Western Cape). The project falls within the promulgated central Strategic Transmission Corridors as per the GN R.113 dated 16 February 2018.
The purpose of the environmental screening entails the review of two alternative routes for a 2nd 765kV transmission line as previously assessed and recently updated. It will also review upgrade works that have to be done at the Gamma and Kappa substations to accommodate the 2nd 765kV transmission line. The environmental screening will update previous assessments to evaluate the potential impact that the transmission line as well as the additional works at the substations may have on the environment and identify possible fatal flaws.
The outcome of the environmental screening will be a Screening Report. The Screening Report will recommend which alternative route can be used as the route for the subsequent Basic Assessment process which is required for future application of an environmental authorisation. The route recommended will also be the route which Eskom will pre-negotiate with landowners for future servitudes before the Basic Assessment process commences.
Meetings will be held with various stakeholders to discuss the environmental screening towards the preparation of the Draft Screening Report and to obtain comments and issues from stakeholders on the proposal to construct a 2nd 765 kV transmission line from Gamma to Kappa substations. The Draft Screening Report will be made available for stakeholder review towards October 2020.

Eskom Holdings SOC Limited het Nako/Iliso (Pty) Ltd aangestel om ’n omgewingsifting te doen vir die konstruksie van ’n tweede 765 kV-Gamma-Kappa-transmissielyn en die uitbreiding van die Gamma-substasiewerf (naby Victoria-Wes in die Noord-Kaap) en die Kappa-substasiewerf (naby Touwsrivier in die Wes-Kaap). Die projek val binne die gepromulgeerde sentrale Strategiese Transmissiekorridors ooreenkomstig GK R.113 van 16 Februarie 2018.
Die doel van die omgewingsifting behels die beoordeling van twee alternatiewe roetes vir ’n tweede 765 kV-transmissielyn soos voorheen geassesseer en onlangs bygewerk. Dit sal ook opgraderingswerk evalueer wat by die Gamma- en die Kappa-substasie gedoen moet word om die tweede 765 kV-transmissielyn te akkommodeer. Die omgewingsifting sal vorige assesserings bywerk om die potensiële impak te evalueer wat die transmissielyn asook die bykomende werk by die substasies op die omgewing kan hê, en sal moontlike noodlottige gebreke identifiseer.
Die uitkoms van die omgewingsifting sal ’n Siftingsverslag wees. Die Siftingsverslag sal aanbeveel watter alternatiewe roete gebruik kan word as die roete vir die daaropvolgende Basiese Assesseringsproses, wat nodig is vir toekomstige aansoek vir omgewingsmagtiging. Die aanbevole roete sal ook die roete wees waaroor Eskom vooraf met grondeienaars sal onderhandel vir toekomstige serwitute voordat die Basiese Assesseringsproses begin.
Daar sal vergaderings met verskeie belanghebbendes wees om die omgewingsifting te bespreek vir die opstel van ’n Konsep-Siftingsverslag en om kommentaar en kwellings van belanghebbendes te kry oor die voorstel om ’n tweede 765 kV-transmissielyn van die Gamma- na die Kappa-substasie te bou. Die Konsep-Siftingsverslag sal teen Oktober 2020 ter insae aan belanghebbendes beskikbaar gestel word.
